Management speak but no substance

A friend of mine wrote an article some four years ago and it rang a bell with me. In his article he complains about management speak in the private sector. I would only really take issue on one thing and that he has ignored the fundamental problems in the public sector with careerists and those telling you what you should now say instead of simply saying things as they are.

The private sector is not funded by the tax payer, a poor company that still functions is still contributing to the economy rather than draining it. Even a good public sector department cannot lay claim to that. However I am not aiming what I say particularly at fire fighters, police officers, teachers or nurses, simply those who manage them. However in other departments there is a complete lack of function to them as a result of this.

Thought this blog needed an update so I will update you about a few things in that case.

The last 4 weeks have really been difficult due to increased demand for my web designs but it left a hole where I was unable to make sales due to doing the web design work. So as predicted this month has been slow. That combined with a change in circumstances (ironic enough the reasons are all good) has meant I have had a hole to fill while re-investing money made to allow for growth in the business. So roughly translated from a personal point of view I am a bit skint and need to get selling on Monday.

A warm but overcast Wednesday evening I was looking for an evening haunt that was friendly to people who do not drink. Something that did not fall into the category of pub but allowed those who like a coffee to sit relax and have time to catch up on some work at the same time.

I was surprised to hear my phone ring and on the other end of the line was a familiar voice, asking me if I would come down and be a coach for Sporting Armley for the 2010/11 season. They will be starting in a new league and along with it comes new challenges. Their manager Jason wants some organisation bringing into training sessions and I was flattered he asked me if I would be responsible for that. Sporting Armley have already had success on the pitch in previous seasons. Last season they won their Division championship with ease and also picked up a cup along the way. In 2008/09 they were runners-up in the Leeds Red Triangle First Division, so they are a team that are already adept at playing together and winning, unlike the team I managed back in 2007, who were first timers together.

New business web design in Leeds

Having just finished a web design for Euroclean who are carpet and upholstery cleaners in Leeds. I thought it would be a good idea to tell you a little about it. With this web design I wanted to give the client something a little different from what is around in their industry to give them the edge over competitors online.

I am quite confident that if the client chooses to go down the route of Search Engine Optimization they will benefit from the majority of the work available in Leeds on the internet as I have made sure that their website actually tells the potential customer what they want to hear. Most made a mistake of telling people about themselves and what equipment they use. I figured that the customer actually just wants a clean living environment that feels like it did when it was new.

So I have done a fresh web design based around that and I am sure the client will feel some major benefits. The domain name came free with the hosting I provide and although not in the list I supplied of potential domain names I am sure it will serve well as another search tool.

As part of the service of having me as your web designer whether in Leeds, or further afield, you will always get sound advice about what is best for your marketing strategy and ideas on how to make the most of your website.

Visit their website http://carpetcleaners-euroclean-leeds.co.uk/

Website Update 28/06/2010

Posted: 28th June 2010 by Richard Copley in Latest News, Website Updates

A quick update. I have a bit of work to do early in the morning for a client and am feeling a bit ill, it has been getting worse since Saturday. So I am going to get an early night.

There are some rough edges with the logo on the website, it is simple to put right, but too much for me to do at the moment. I will be improving the image gallery of my web designs and also adding to the photo gallery too. I will be making a few improvements to the products page as I am still working my way through that, so I am aware of any bugs.

Hopefully I will get the first bit of information out in the books page too, so keep checking that as it is quite a funny book.

If you have been to Leeds during the day you are bound to have seen them. All the energy of a caged kitten, flirting with your wives, girlfriends, boyfriends and husbands just to get a sale. I say just to get a sale, because the primary reason, lets not be conned into believing is to raise money for the NSPCC. If you like many others go into Leeds on a regular basis you will have become a little bit tired of them.

Now I understand they have a job to do, I also reckon they are working commission only for one of these so called Marketing companies making a fortune out of the lack of jobs around. But we have a problem. Firstly the majority of the money you hand over goes straight to the marketing company. It was a line of business I considered going into myself, but then thought better of it, as my conscience simply did not sit right at the thought of “sort of raising money for charity” when in fact all I am doing is lining my own pocket. The NSPCC and it is not just them, Cancer Research are at it and so are the British Red Cross, do not really care what people are getting up to, or how much they earn as a percentage. Why? Well simple maths takes over and tells you that having lots of marketing companies with people like these selling is bound to add up and be cheaper than doing all of this themselves.

Fail Britannia, Is Britannia Doomed To Fail?

Posted: 28th June 2010 by Richard Copley in Business

With England failing to even produce so much as a performance in the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa it made me think about why in this country we seem to be so good at underachievement. Although I do feel that the England players have let the country down by not getting out there and playing it makes me think that maybe things are a little more deep routed than the players being over paid, Fabio Capello getting it wrong with his selection and tactics and even our clubs playing too many games a season. After all the games do not seem to have effected Argentine Carlos Tevez do they?

Then I started thinking about comments I have heard about my venture into the business world “oh he thinks he is Duncan Bannatyne” and “who do you think you are with your Dragons Den box set and copy of Dreamweaver”. Those comments coming from somebody who has spent a year doing a Interactive Media Degree but being utterly unable to deliver on time when I offered him some real work. I will get onto Media degrees later, I think they are almost as useless as the Performing Arts Degree this work shy runt was doing for the two years previous. But it is not the only comment I have heard.
